What Happens When a Company Replaces 2,400 Jobs With AI Overnight? We Simulated It.

July 24, 2026 · A real Foretell simulation on a fictional scenario

We wrote a press release for a company that doesn't exist. Vantaro Communications, a fictional telecom, announces that its AI assistant "Aria" now resolves customer calls in 90 seconds instead of 18 minutes — and that 2,400 customer-service jobs are being eliminated overnight, with no severance plan mentioned.

Then we fed that announcement to Foretell and let the real product do its thing: 1,000 independent AI agents — employees, customers, shareholders, union organizers, journalists, regulators — reacted to it across 4 rounds of simulated public conversation, alongside a quantitative TimesFM forecast of the company's (equally fictional) stock price.

The verdict: risk score 84/100 — and it's not about the AI

The simulation's defining finding: "Zero-severance outrage becomes the defining story, drowning out Aria's efficiency gains and handing labor advocates a viral rallying point." The technology barely mattered. The missing transition plan was the whole story.

What the simulated people said

Every quote below is synthetic — generated by a simulated persona inside the run — and copied verbatim from the report:

“Eight years building this company's reputation, and they eliminate us with zero severance and call it progress.”— a simulated affected customer-service employee
“The real story isn't the AI — it's the missing transition plan. Vantaro handed critics their headline.”— a simulated media commentator
“Love the idea of no wait times, but 2,400 families with zero severance? That's not innovation, that's cost-cutting dressed up.”— a simulated member of the general public

The quantitative twist

The numeric engine disagreed with the outrage: TimesFM projected the fictional $VNTR share price roughly flat (~-1%) over 30 days, with low uncertainty. Foretell's cross-validation noticed the two engines only partly agree — and automatically downgraded its own confidence to medium instead of overclaiming. Markets shrugging while employees organize is itself a finding.

What a comms team would take away

Foretell caught all of that before a single real person read the announcement.

We didn’t stop at the diagnosis — we tested the fix

Because this report scored high-risk, Foretell’s Ideal Solution analysis went further: it built several alternative approaches, screened each against the same simulated audience, then ran the winner through a full 1,000-agent confirmation — all inside the same report, at no extra cost. The lowest-risk approach was “Severance-First Announcement.”

“Before any mention of Aria or the technology rollout, publish a concrete transition package: full severance scaled to tenure, funded reskilling programs, and 6 months of job-placement support. The AI launch is announced only afterward, framed as the reason these support commitments exist. Minimal change to the underlying rollout, but the sequence and headline lead with people, not savings.”— the winning approach, from the report’s Ideal Solution section
